Dark Knight movie poster

I was blown away by this movie. Not only was it spectacular in its presentation- both the actors and the visual affects were stunning- but it really got me thinking about the ideas of morality and sin. I don’t want to spoil the plot, so I shall refrain from another “synopsis” of the film. Instead, this reflection shall encompass the afformentioned ideas.

I firmly believe that sin is rampant in this world. It was introduced by the very “prince of the air” that is currently leading a rebellion against God. Christ’s death was not in vain, as we are all guilty of struggling with our morality and mortality and His blood was the only cloak that could separate us from pure anarchy. Every person in this film struggled with questions of wrong and right- except for one… the Joker represented evil without bounds.

I think the scariest thing about him is that he is human. Comic book villians of old have supernatural powers or fantastic backstories. This man has a personality disorder and a mysterious past. He is a person with a mask- and no sense of morality. There is no remorse or regret for his actions… his tools of choice are bombs and knives. He could be the man down the street for all we know. There is nothing fantastic about him… he is as realistic as murderers past- consumed by anger and jaded by experience.

I have thought about what I would do if put in the position of some of the heroes of this film… would I take revenge into my own hands or would I be capable of leaving justice to the law (or the Lord?) Honestly, I don’t know. If someone were to hurt someone I love, I would probably snap. I too could be capable of a momentary lapse of reason- much like Harvey Dent- if pushed far enough. Any of us could.
