Remembering Ryan
Posted by Gina under memories
Ryan Haupt was a hero. Not just to his three sisters, who adored him and loved him dearly. Not just to his parents, who had separated when he was young. He was a hero to his country- He was a staff sargeant in the Army. He was a hero to his men- risking his life for the benefit of others. The day he died, he was supposed to fly home. Instead, he gave up his seat to go on one final mission. His final mission.
Ryan was killed by a roadside bomb. Tifany’s mom was the first to know and she told Laurie. Laurie had to stall until Tif could hear the news herself. It was a very looong night for all of us. Tifany loved her brother dearly and was estatic about his return. She could not wait to see him. It crushed us all to know that the next time she would see him, he would be in a 5ft casket… the man had been over 6ft tall.
All of her close friends found ways to the funeral. We scrambled. A few of us arrived late (thanks to an accidental sidetrip to Wisconson) We were all upset and crushed… hurting for our friend. We wanted the news to be wrong, for the wrong person to have been identified and for Ryan to be safely on the next flight home. We all had to deal with the fact that the man in the stories was now gone.
He was a hero and he was treated like one. He was given a military funeral, complete with bikers to protect from protesters. It was an amazing sight to see- total strangers coming around to thank a man who had given his life for his country. As we later learned, the Chicago police force had lost one of their own that week so they scheduled the funeral for their fallen man around Ryan’s funeral, to make sure that the force could be there to direct traffic. Everyone who could surrounded the family and offered up encouragement. As difficult a situation as it was, I am grateful that Ryan was honored for the sacrifice he has made. He wouldn’t have had it any other way.
