I found out about this one on accident… and it crushed me all the same.

Mrs. MacQuaker was like a grandmother to me. She was the wife of Gordon MacQuaker- the founder of our chapter of the “I Have a Dream” foundation. My mom had worked for the foundation since 1998, so I spent lots of time hanging with Mrs. Mac and Suzzie as mom and Mac hashed out details and informed one another about the kids. She was a lover of chocolate and scotch, and a true hoot to talk to. She loved golf, her man, her dog, and her life. It was so hard to so see her towards the end… she had alzhimers and thought I was one of her grand daughters… or my mom… or whatever came to her mind. She had the hardest time understanding that her husband was gone, even at his funeral. When she saw him lying there, she underwent a transformation… she realized he was gone- for that moment.

In some ways, I think her alzheimers was a blessing at that time of her life… many of us thought she would go before Mac, but it was he who went “home” first. I think it would have killed her to fully realize that the love of her life was gone- and the same for him.

The two of them were such a blessing in my life… and I hope to never forget them.

DOROTHY MAC QUAKER Dorothy Mac Quaker, formerly from Delray Dunes Country Club, Boynton Beach, passed over to the other side Sunday, February 10, 2008. Her wish was granted to join her husband Gordon who passed away this last July and her favorite dog Suzzie who passed away in August. Dorothy had just celebrated her 91st birthday. She is survived by her grandchildren Brian and Cynthia Whitten, Melissa McLaughlin, Katie Fontana, Maggie Coate, Tom Coate, and David Coate; her son-in-law William Whitten; and step-son Michael Coate. Her only daughter Jo Anne passed away in 1972. Dorothy was born in Minnesota but spent much of her life in and around Chicago, Illinois. She was an excellent cook, when she wanted to be, and an avid golfer for as long as she was able. She was very involved with the ‘I Have A Dream’ program in the Boynton Beach area with her husband Gordon. She lived at Delray Dunes for 30 years and moved to Texas only when her health care dictated a need to be closer to her granddaughter and family. Dorothy was a long time member of Seacrest Presbyterian Church and would wish contributions be directed to the church or the Seacrest Christian School or Moody Bible Institute in lieu of flowers. She will be missed but we know she is in that better place her Lord prepared for her. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM, Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Boynton Memorial Chapel, 800 W. Boynton Beach Blvd., Boynton Beach. A visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm, Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
